December 2011 Archives
Q. I’m so over my dark skinny jeans and I’m not really into wide leg jeans. Are there any new denim trends I can wear with my winter sweaters?
A. If you’re feeling adventurous, there are several new denim trends to try to update your wardrobe this season:
- Printed jeans: skinny jeans in everything from wild animal prints to subtle jacquard patterns are the newest way to have fun with denim.
- Bold color: red is the hottest hue for denim at the moment, but other jewel tones are also brightening up winter looks this season.
- Coated denim: take a shine to slick leather-look coated denim and shimmering metallic denim to add a rocker edge to your look.
Q. I’m headed to London for the Christmas week and will be doing tons of walking. Since I recently hurt my knee, comfortable shoes are really important, but I don’t want to look like a fashion victim in big clunky sneakers. Also I typically wear skinny jeans/pants so they look a bit weird paired with a sneaker, but it will be too cold to wear a maryjane type walking shoe. I’ve been desperately looking for comfy boots that I can sightsee in all day, bonus if they’re weather-proof for rainy London! I have extremely narrow calves so on top of that, so I have a problem finding tall boots that fit. Thank you!!
A. For walking around London with your skinny jeans, I would recommend investing in a chic pair of rubber soled ankle or mid-calf boots to avoid having to worry about fitting a tall boot to your narrow calves. Though comfort is a priority, that’s no reason to sacrifice style. As a personal favorite, I have walked for hours in my Frye Engineer boots, just add a comfy thick sock — and they look great with skinny jeans. And when it comes to comfort and warmth, you can’t beat an Ugg boot, though whether you think they’re stylish is up to you. Finally, I love the look of a rugged fur lined boot like the Sorels below with skinny jeans, even if your winter coat is a bit on the dressier side, it’s a great contrast (and very London!). Plus, I can personally attest to how amazingly comfortable they are.
Below are some options for you to try out for your trip. I purposely selected only boots from Zappos because of its free shipping and return policy. This will allow you to order several pairs of boots at once and wear them around the house as much as possible to select the one that will be most comfortable for a week’s worth of walking. Bonus, they’ll all serve you well for the damp British weather.
Q. I’m looking for some stylish winter boots (I live in MN.). I love the Blondo Leonie boot in Mushroom Suede, but I can’t find them in my size (7 wide) anywhere! Can you suggest something similar? I thought these hit the right mark with stylish and practical.
A. You will be happy to know that we found 7 Wides in your color preference on Amazon.com today (click the image at right). However, here are some more options that are similar in style and equally as practical for snow and rain.
Q. I am attending a wedding on New Year’s Eve beginning at 7 pm at a traditional Methodist church. I am at a loss of what to wear! Is going sparkly too inappropriate?
A. I would say, if someone plans a wedding for New Year’s Eve, they better expect that people will bring on the bling! Ring in the New Year and toast the happy couple in a dress that is festive, yet appropriate for a church wedding. Skip anything too sexy, and perhaps forego something too bright, like red sequins, but other than that, have fun with your look. If you’re not comfortable wearing a sparkly dress, opt for some sparkling accessories, including shoes, instead.
The blue look on this page would work well, or try one of these festive dresses:
Q. Help! I just moved to a cold climate and can no longer wear ballet flats with my boyfriend jeans. I have seen celebs, such as Rachel Bilson, wear boots with boyfriends and it looks good.. How do you do this? Do they have to have a heel? I would prefer a low heel or flat. Also, can you recommend any that are less than $150?
A. It can be somewhat tricky to pull off a boyfriend jean with boots, but it definitely can be done. An ankle boot with a heel is the easiest style to wear, however, a flat combat-style or rugged boot also looks great (see Jennifer Aniston, below). If your cuffs hit above the top of your ankle boot, add some wooly socks for warmth (and style).

Here are some boots under $150 to try with your boyfriend jeans.
Q. I have seen this around as a recent trend. Can you tell me how to wear them with skirts?
A. Leg warmers have been circling around for a few years now, and there’s a reason they haven’t really caught on: they’re just not that flattering. Unless you are under the age of 20, I think this is one retro trend not worth buying into. I mean, how cold do your calves really get? If the answer is very, opt for a chic tall boot instead.
However, if you’re really excited to give them a try, here are some street style snaps for inspiration on how to wear your leg warmers with leggings, skinny jeans, and dresses. To answer your question, the best way to wear with skirts is to layer over opaque tights and booties or pumps. The shorter your hemline, the better your legs will look since leg warmers will add bulk to the lower half of your leg.
