Q. I'm going to Montego Bay for a vacation/wedding, not mine. I'm trying to figure out what to pack. I'm thinking shorts, tanks and bikinis but what about the wedding? I'm not sure what to wear that would be appropriate but comfortable in the heat. It's semi-formal. Could you give me some hints? Thanks.

A. How fun! Without doubt, you want to wear a pretty, fun, lightweight dress that has a hint of island attitude for a destination wedding in Jamaica. Look for fabrics like chiffon and jersey that won't wrinkle in your suitcase. You didn't mention whether the wedding is inside or outside, so be sure to pack a pair of glam flat sandals in case the ceremony takes place on the beach or grass.

Q. I am attending a girlfriend's wedding at the end of March in San Diego. Her ceremony and reception will be held at a Yacht Club, I was wondering what would be most appropriate.

A. Assuming there wasn't a recommended attire on the invitation and that the wedding is in the evening, women should wear a pretty cocktail dress in a classic silhouette and men should wear a nice suit. Since we are headed into spring, we recommend wearing something with color or one of this season's pretty pastel dresses. Don't forget a wrap or cover-up in case some of the affair takes place outdoors. Here are a few options:

Q. HELP!! My Fiance's mother is throwing us an engagement party luncheon at a country club at the end of March in Boston and I have no idea what to wear. I went looking for dresses last weekend and found a few that I liked but I think they are all a bit to fancy for a luncheon. From people I've talked to, they all say something along the lines of "Sunday Best" but I can't seem to find something that looks good and doesn't look either matronly or like a child. I have a few weeks but I'm starting to panic that I won't have anything and will have to wear my standby LBD and I don't want to wear black, it's my engagement and I think I should be in color or white or something that makes me stand out a bit...but clearly I've never done this before so I don't know. I know the LBD is always classic and I can add color with shoes, purse and jewelry, but I'm a very classic girl, at least where jewelry is concerned, so I was hoping to be able to wear my grandmother's pearls or her diamond necklace. Any tips would be really helpful!

A. Deep breath. Your engagement party is going to be wonderful, no matter what you wear, but of course you want to look great since you'll be the center of attention. Though it is a luncheon, feel free to dress a bit nicer than the guests, it's your party! A dress or pretty top and skirt is your best option. Though we are huge fans of a classic little black dress, you are correct that this occasion calls for something a bit more colorful or bridal. You're in luck - pretty spring dresses are everywhere now, you just need to find your perfect one.

Since we love the idea of you wearing your grandmother's pearls or diamond necklace, we have selected some pretty dresses with necklines to accommodate them. Here are some pretty, yet classic, ideas for you that will look great in photos 20 years from now:

Q. I am attending a wedding in February (in Chicago). It is a morning wedding with a luncheon following. I have a cap sleeved navy silk sheath dress with a black patent leather belt. My question is do I wear hosiery? If so, what color? Peek a boo shoes or classic pumps?

A. February in Chicago can be quite cold. Black solid tights or black textured tights paired with either peep-toe pumps or classic pumps is your best bet. The black/navy combination is a perfectly chic option for your daytime wedding.

Q. Hi! I'm coordinating my cousin's wedding in St. Louis at the end of March so I want to be chic & stylish but comfortable (no strapless) as I will be working. Any suggestions? I'm curvy (size 8) and petite (5'3"). Thanks!

A. You didn't mention a color preference, or whether the wedding is black tie or not, so we've pulled together a variety of dresses for you to choose from. All of them are flattering for a curvy petite figure, and most importantly, you won't have to worry about adjusting straps.

Q. I'm going to a Winter Wedding and want to wear a pair of pink pants, they are lined so they were meant for Winter, will wear them with brown boots, is this OK?  And what color top should I wear?

A. As you can tell from our site, we are huge fans of pink and brown paired together. However, the combination of pink pants and brown boots just sounds too casual to be worn to a wedding, even an informal one. If you are going to wear pants, they should be a dressy style like a tuxedo pant or a dressy black pant, and worn with dressy pieces like evening shoes and a sequin jacket or lace top.

If you feel that your pink pants are dressy enough to wear to a wedding, then pair them with a strappy heel instead of your boots. Silver, gray, gold or even black shoes would work. The top, of course, would depend on the shoes you choose, but look for something that will add an evening feel to your look.

Here is one way to dress up your pants for the wedding:

Can I wear boots to a wedding?

comments

Q. I have a wedding in Atlanta this month. It is an evening wedding and I bought a great green dress for the occasion that would be accompanied by a black sparkly shawl. I was wondering if it was acceptable to pair that with a great pair of black calf boots with 3 inch heels and a buckle? I thought it looked pretty good, but have been told not to wear boots to a wedding. Is this true?

laundrybuckleboot.jpg

A. Your dress and shawl sound lovely. Unfortunately, however, I agree with your friends that boots are not the best option for an evening wedding. Most boots would be considered too casual to wear to a formal affair. You are much better off opting for a black evening shoe. Here are a few of our favorites:

Q. Hello, I'm trying to find an affordable white dress that hits just below the knee for my very private wedding. I'm low on cash and only able to get a dress under $60. I need it before December 29 2009. HELP!!!! I would love to get a strapless dress. I have included links to dresses that I like. Please think simplistic chic!

A. I wish I had better news for you, but it's nearly impossible to find a white wedding-appropriate dress for under $60 this time of year. We eliminated anything too summery and casual and came up with the following options for you. A few of them are a bit more than you want to spend, but still under $100. Good luck!

Edgy plus size evening dresses

comments

Q. I will be attending a 700 guest wedding in a few weeks and I am confused about what to wear. I am a size 16 and have tattoos and facial piercings. It's so hard to find a dress that would accommodate my style. I love the rocker look but do not like showing my legs. so i tend to wear tube dresses that hit mid calf. What would you suggest for plus size dresses and shoes?

A. We totally dig the rocker look, but even rock stars have to dress for an elegant affair. Below are a few dresses that don't show too much skin and won't compromise your edgy style.

Choose an edgy, yet evening-appropriate shoe to complement your dress:

priscilladress.jpgQ. I will be wearing this dress as the Maid of Honor in my cousin's Labor Day Weekend wedding. I will be wearing a pewter colored strappy high heeled sandal as well. I wanted to bring some color into the outfit with my jewelry. I figured a pair of ginormous costume earrings and bracelet would do. What color do you recommend?

A. Since your dress and shoes are both pewter, adding color to your look through jewelry is perfect. Focusing on your earrings and a bracelet and leaving your neck bare is a great look. Jewel tones like sapphire, amethyst, emerald and ruby would look gorgeous, as would icy colors like lavender and cool pinks. Keep the metals in the silver/pewter family instead of gold.
