Q. I love wearing tights with high heels, but how do I prevent my feet from slipping inside my shoes!

A. It sounds to me like your shoes may not fit properly. We are huge fans of Foot Petals products which offer various shoe inserts to help your shoes fit better. If this doesn’t keep your foot from sliding, you might want to try a little double-stick wardrobe tape like Topstick on the soles of your tights to help prevent slippage. Finally, you might want to opt for heels with ankle straps or t-straps which will help keep your foot in place.

Q. I’m heading to Tokyo, Thailand, and Cambodia for a month. I’m super pumped about the trip as I have not had the opportunity to travel outside of the country for a couple of years and I have never been to Southeast Asia (though I’ve always wanted to go).

I’ve learned (the hard way) that one really shouldn’t over-pack for these adventures, so I’m only bringing a carry-on sized bag and a collapsible duffel that will come along to tote around souvenirs before I ship them home. For this trip I especially want to only bring the bare minimum because I’ve heard that everything is very inexpensive other there (including clothes) and that I will be able to buy climate appropriate wear—read: made for the incredibly hot and humid weather—for very little money. However, I still need to bring some basics. And I will need something to wear in Tokyo, where we will be stopping for the first few days of our trip before we get to Thailand and the prices are much higher.

My question is this: What should I bring ? How would you pack?

I only want to bring around 6 pieces. My activities will be so diverse—city sightseeing in Tokyo and Bangkok; Temple Trekking in Cambodia; an elephant trek through mountain villages in Northern Thailand; and beach hopping all along the way—so bringing diverse pieces will be essential. Laundry can be easily done so I have no problem wearing the same things over and over.

Other things you should know: I am petite (size 2 or 4) but (unluckily) big busted so braless is never an option.

A. Sounds like a fantastic trip! I applaud your plan to pack very lightly since you don’t want to be bogged down with cumbersome luggage. For the hot & humid climate and the varied outings you plan to take, I suggest the following extremely pared-down, yet functional, list:

1. 2 to 3 tank tops/t-shirts
2. pair of shorts
3. casual skirt
4. casual day dress
5. comfortable yet chic sandals for city tours
6. hiking shoes/sneakers for treks
7. linen scarf/wrap - just in case you need an extra layer
8. hat

Look for fabrics that are easily packed and either won’t wrinkle or are meant to be wrinkled (like the scarf and skirt below). The packable items below will keep you comfortable, well-dressed and should carry you through the month. Have fun!

Q. I’ve seen lots of adorable denim shorts in magazines and on celebrities lately, and I love the look - both the ragged-edge cut-offs and cute cuffed styles. What style is most flattering on those of us that aren’t model-skinny?

Any tips for doing it myself and cutting off a pair? I have several drawers full of old jeans at home (it’s an addiction), many of which I rarely wear because they are either no longer in style or don’t fit perfectly. I’d love to transform an unused pair into cute shorts!

And how can I wear them without looking sloppy? Somehow all the magazines make jean shorts look like part of a purposeful outfit rather than bummy weekend wear - what’s the secret?

A. Denim shorts are indeed a big trend this season, available in long knee-grazing lengths and short “Daisy Duke” lengths, with or without cuffs and in all washes ranging from dark to super distressed. In other words, when it comes to denim shorts, practically anything goes.

When it comes to finding the most flattering style for your figure, it’s all about your thighs. If your thighs are slim and toned, you’re one of the lucky few who can wear most styles. For the rest of us, we recommend choosing a length that covers the widest (or bumpiest) part of your thighs. Petite women look best in lengths that hit mid-thigh or above to help lengthen legs. Below are some styles in varying lengths and washes:

Denim shorts can also be quite versatile: wear them with tank tops and t-shirts with beachy sandals, or feminine blouses and boyfriend blazers with heels and wedges. Below are some looks for inspiration (first 2 images: shopbop.com; image at right: freepeople.com):

If you have piles full of old jeans, we absolutely encourage a DIY approach to this trend, especially since designer pairs can cost $200 or more. To figure out what length you want your shorts to be, start by trying on your jeans and marking with a pen where you would like to begin cutting. Remember, you can always cut more off, so it’s better to start with a longer length to be safe. If you plan to cuff your shorts, be sure to leave ample length for a double cuff (this will hide the raw edge). For a neater cuffed look, iron your cuffs and secure them with a stitch or two to keep them from unrolling. For a messy frayed edge, wash and dry your shorts a few times and the edges will begin to unravel.

3279-442574-d.jpg.jpegQ. I was wondering what I can wear with these ankle boots and if there was anyway I can wear them this summer without looking TOO ridiculous.

A. These are great boots that you will get a lot of wear from, however, they really are too heavy to wear in the summer. Tuck them away and take them out at the end of September to wear with everything from dresses to skinny jeans (check out this article for ideas on how to wear them).

Q. I’m over 50 and in search of an age-appropriate dress to wear to work this summer. I’m not comfortable wearing sleeveless, so it should have short sleeves, and I’m also a bit self-conscious about my stomach. The dress should hit around the knee and be easy and comfortable to wear, yet impressive enough for my job in sales. Thanks for your help!

A. Sure thing! Here are several short sleeve, knee length dresses for you to choose from:
