Q. I’m going to a wedding in LA next month and absolutely stumped at what to wear. It’s going to be at a country club in the mid-afternoon. I was told suits for the guys, but wasn’t given any indication on what to wear as a girl. I’m 5’8, size 12-14, with a smaller waist and more junk in my trunk, and I want to also look as slim as possible! What do I wear??

A. Afternoon weddings are my favorite! They are a great excuse to get dressed up and wear a pretty dress, without having to invest in something black tie. In other words, you’ll get a lot more use out of the dress you choose! Play up your assets with a fitted top that shows off your waist and shoulders and look for a skirted bottom that flares out to conceal your “junk”.

For a spring afternoon wedding, I love a pretty printed dress, so here are a few options to choose from. Add a pair of heels, some fun jewelry and a pretty clutch and you’re all set!

Q. I have my own engagement party coming up this weekend. I was hoping to find more of the spring colors out in the stores, but that doesn’t seem to be the case yet. I found a pretty black satin Betsey Johnson Dress. It’s to the knee and fitted. Is it wrong to wear black to my own engagement party? Are there any other options to order ?

I was thinking of adding fun shoes to it to make it a little more colorful and spring, maybe hot pink or light pink ? My wedding colors are raspberry, blush and silver, so I thought this might be cute.

Would a fun shoe look ridiculous ? Can you recommend some great high heel shoes for this occasion ? Thank you very much!!!

A. Congratulations on your engagement! While black would not be my first choice for you, what’s most important is that you feel good in your dress. A little black dress is a classic and works for pretty much any occasion, so if you love your dress and feel confident, that’s what matters.

I love the look of a bright shoe with a LBD, it’s a great way to add some fun and a touch of spring to your look. Also consider adding a bright earring or statement necklace (not both) to the look. Here are some ideas for inspiration:

Q. I am in search of a sequin mini dress with 3/4 quarter or long sleeves to wear to a wedding in NYC in February. This dress seems to be impossible to find for under $300. Can you help me find something cute and classy?

A. We love a good sequin mini dress, especially with long sleeves or 3/4 length sleeves which help give a short dress a more sophisticated silhouette. We found some beautiful dresses in your price range below that are so pretty, you won’t want to wait until February to wear! You’ll get plenty of wear out of your dress for holiday parties or New Year’s Eve. You can also dress it down for a fun night on the town with a leather or denim jacket, or a blazer.

Q. I am wearing this dress to a (not super fancy) evening wedding in Connecticut this summer and also to a lower key wedding in Crete this fall. I’m looking for styling help - accessories, purse, layer, shoes? I do have a pair of neutral metallic peep toes that may work for the CT wedding. If you could help at all so I can get more out of this dress I would appreciate it! I’d love ideas for fun jewelry - and whether to wear simply earrings or earrings and necklace? I feel that there’s a lot of pattern in the dress.

A. You can do so much with this bold printed chiffon dress, it’s a great choice for not-too-dressy weddings - and one that you will get a lot of wear out of in the future. If the temperatures are warm, we suggest wearing it on its own with metallic strappy heels or your peep toes. You might want to bring along an evening wrap in case you get chilly. For jewelry, we recommend you skip the necklace and opt for dramatic drop earrings that incorporate one of the many colors in the dress. You can also add a pretty bracelet or cocktail ring. An evening clutch finishes the look.

For a more sophisticated look, try layering a tuxedo jacket or dressy black blazer over the dress and opting for black heels. You can also have fun dressing it down for a dinner out with friends with a denim jacket, leather jacket or boyfriend blazer and a pair of booties or wedge sandals.

Q. I’m attending a wedding in October in the Berkshires in Lenox, MA. The wedding is in a historic mansion and is at 1 p.m. The bride is encouraging guests to wear fall colors, and said that her friends are wearing cocktail dresses. Cocktail dresses seems a little dressy to me for an afternoon wedding in artsy Lenox. Any suggestions for this 40 year old?

A. A cocktail dress typically refers to a shorter length dress, which is perfectly appropriate for a 1:00 wedding. And if the bride recommends a cocktail dress in fall colors, then you should do your best to honor her wishes. Here are some great age-appropriate dresses to wear to the wedding that you’ll surely wear again:
