Q. Is it taboo to wear sheer hose in the winter with a cocktail dress? My legs seem so pasty in the winter, and self tanners are always some sort of social suicide.

A. When you say sheer, I am assuming that you mean sheer nude hosiery. While not taboo, I am not a huge fan of nude hosiery. Unless you manage to find an ultrasheer shade that truly disappears against your skin, I would skip the nudes and opt for one of this season’s chic hosiery trends. The trend this season is not to pretend as if you’re not wearing hosiery, and instead wear prints, patterns and textures proudly.

For an evening look with your cocktail dress, perhaps try sheer black pantyhose (they’re back in style!) or a sophisticated lace pair.

Q. I want to get a military jacket but are they still going to be in fashion the next season?

A. Military is a huge trend for Spring 2010, as designers like Marc Jacobs, Rag & Bone, Balmain and Celine (below) found inspiration from the Army Navy store in everything from jackets to pants to footwear.

So, there’s never been a better time to splurge on a military jacket that you’ll wear now and all the way through spring. Here are a few options worthy of taking a place in your wardrobe - and many of them are super affordable.

Q. Is it still ok to wear bell bottom jeans? I have some from the Gap that I got in the spring that are the dark wash and like new.

A. True, all we seem to see are skinny jeans these days, but that doesn’t mean you can’t wear other jean styles. Celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe is a huge fan of ultra flared jeans, proving that it’s always chic to march to your own beat. Since flared jeans have a ’70s vibe, we’re loving them with faux fur vests, belted shirts and leather jackets. Whatever you wear on top, make sure it has a slim silhouette to offset the wide hem of your jeans. Here are a few looks for inspiration:

Q. I work in a business casual atmosphere where there is a lot of flexibility in appearance. I’m always annoyed with my shoes by the end of the day, even my flats. Are there fancy sneakers that I can wear to work with trousers or something equally comfortable?

A. Your appearance matters, even in a business casual office, so it’s always important to look neat and professional. Therefore, we are not fans of sneakers with trousers. If your usual shoes or flats are uncomfortable by the end of the day, you can try some of the many gel insoles available, like these from Dr. Scholl’s.

If the insoles don’t work, we recommend investing in a pair of Cole Haan shoes with Nike Air technology. They offer a huge range of stylish shoes that contain low profile cushioning. In other words, they look like a shoe but feel like a sneaker.

Q. I have a sequin shrug/jacket and I don’t know what shoes to wear with it. Can you help?

A. For most occasions, we recommend wearing just one shiny piece at a time, so try pairing a suede pump or leather bootie with your sequin jacket. For a dressier occasion, however, you can get away with a metallic or shiny shoe with your jacket, provided the rest of your look is more subdued (i.e. a little black dress). Below are some pairings for inspiration.
