Q. What type of shirt would you suggest I wear with a rattlesnake skin pencil skirt? Also what type of shoes should I wear? Please give me several options.

A. A snakeskin skirt can be a really chic fashion forward look - or it can look really cheap and tacky. It’s all in how you wear your skirt that keeps you looking classy. Refrain from showing a lot of skin, plunging necklines or from wearing a really tight top. Try pairing your skirt with simple, classic and ladylike pieces like a tailored white button down, a fitted (but not tight) simple top or sweater, or a classic cardigan or blazer. On your feet, stick with classic pumps or heels. Here are a few ladylike looks incorporating a python skirt:

Q. I’ve just purchased a sleevless black dress that has a wide belt which sits just below the waist. The dress is very fitted and comes to the knee. I have a pair of black stylish heels. If I do decide to wear hosiery would I wear nude, black or a color….I would appreciate your opinion.

A. The beauty of a black shift dress is that it’s a neutral canvas that works with a multitude of colorful accessories and legwear. Skip the nude hosiery this season and opt for black tights or one of this season’s bevy of colors, prints and patterns instead.

Q. I am wondering that type of shoes I can wear with my boyfriend jeans for the fall? Or should I put away the boyfriend jeans until spring?

A. You will be thrilled to know that you can wear your boyfriend jeans in the fall. Pile on the layers with cardigans, blazers, leather jackets and more. On your feet, you can wear ballet flats or heels for as long as your bare ankles can stand the cold. When the temperature drops, turn to ankle boots instead. Below are some runway looks and shoe choices for inspiration:

Q. I’ve been out of work for a few months and finally have a really promising interview. Since I’ve had to cut corners lately, I don’t really have a lot to spend on an interview outfit. Can you recommend something affordable that I can get more than one wear out of?

A. It’s a lot easier to dress to impress a potential employer on a budget than you might think. We consulted Ryan Kohnen, the 29-year-old entrepreneur and author of the new book Young Professional’s Guide To Success and he offered these top 5 ways to dress for a job interview for less than $100:

1. Go monochromatic. Dressing in one color is always polished and can make up for the fact that your suit isn’t Armani.

2. Develop a relationship with a tailor. Even a $20 pair of Gap dress pants are interview-worthy if they fit right.

3. Discount retailers and off-season sales are your friends. Last season’s perfectly fashionable castoffs can be yours for often one quarter of the price.

4. Separates are an option, especially in neutral colors. A navy cardigan can replace a navy jacket-especially when paired with a navy pencil skirt.

5. Limit jewelry. It can tend towards expensive or showy, and neither will do you any favors while you’re looking for work.

What we say: Simple is better. Unless you are interviewing for a position in the fashion or style industry, it’s best to keep your look simple and classic. Avoid anything overly trendy or detailed, especially when you’re looking for clothes on a budget.

A simple seasonless sheath dress or pencil skirt in a basic color are perfect foundation pieces for your interview and work wardrobe. Add interest and dimension with jackets, cardigans, belts and jewelry to change up your look. Invest in rich looking accessories like a chic work tote and great looking shoes. They don’t have to be designer, but the materials should be of the best quality you can afford. Be sure to wear hosiery if you are interviewing at a conservative corporate office. If you’re unsure, it’s best to be safe and wear pantyhose or tights.

Below are some mix and match options that are affordable, classic and seasonless, so you’ll get a lot of wear out of them when you finally land the big job!

Q. I am going on a date and bought this great dress from Kenneth Cole (but in a black color). What should I accessorize with (shoes, bag, earrings) to avoid looking too trendy, clubby, etc and just look great for the evening out? Any advice? I am a huge fan of bold earings and bracelets…should I avoid this since the dress has an interesting pattern?

A. Great dress! To tone down the dress and keep it classic, not trendy, let the pattern on the dress do the talking. Go for chic yet subtle accessories like the selections shown below.
