As someone with sensitive skin, I usually find myself erring on safety’s side and reaching for unscented products. It’s a smart move, of course, but it’s kind of…well, boring. Everything from my body lotion to my hand soap is typically either unscented or mildly scented. Even though I constantly yearn to try the newest cool fragrance on the shelf, I resist for the sake of my skin.

So imagine my delight when I took the myTide selector quiz and learned that the best suggested product for my lifestyle was Tide HE plus a Touch of Downy. That laundry-fresh scent is one I’ve always loved - it’s just so clean, warm and cozy all at once. Of course I ran right out and bought a bottle of the stuff so I could give it a try. Its promise: super softness, visible cleanliness and an addictive April Fresh fragrance.

I did a test wash with a couple of garments just to be safe, including a pair of pants with a wine stain (oops!) and a stretchy jersey shirt. Both came out perfectly: spotless, the wine stain a distant memory and my white top somehow as flawless as the day I purchased it. The addition of Downy left both pieces noticeably softer than they would be otherwise, and I loved the slightly powdery scent, reminiscent of a pile of freshly laundered towels. It was just fragrant enough to be noticeable, but not so much so that I felt overwhelmed - and, thankfully, it didn’t irritate my skin in the least.

Color me - and my laundry - impressed! It’s always exciting to add a new item to my arsenal - one that works, won’t break the bank and actually kind of makes me look forward to doing laundry. That little impossibility alone makes it worth the purchase!

fresh-veggies-1.jpgI’ve always believed in eating healthy, fresh foods that deliver valuable nutrients and minerals to my body while also sustaining me and keeping me satisfied. To me, the key has always been to treat it as a lifestyle and not as a “diet,” which usually assumes some sort of negative connotation. That said, there’s always some sort of temptation to fall into easy traps that many food companies try to lead consumers into - think the convenient, easy foods marketed as “healthy” and “quick.” While I like a tasty breakfast bar as much as the next person, I also recognize it’s not actually all that healthy at all - and it’s certainly not fresh.

That’s what makes healthy eating so appealing to me. Fresh foods are not just better tasting, but better for the body as well. And by adopting a few simple, innovative methods, I’ve found it’s really easy to incorporate fresh foods into my diet every single day. To start, my fridge is always stocked with a variety of herbs, usually chopped and ready to add to everything from leafy green salads to homemade soups. When I have some time, I mix them with Greek yogurt or sour cream for a cool vegetable dip or salad topping.

Vegetables are fresh-diet staples, of course, but there’s no denying that whole routine can get a little boring. I like to shake things up by adding a variety of spice blends to the meal. Steamed vegetables taste great with things like chili powder, turmeric, paprika or black pepper. The aforementioned herbs - think parsley, dill and tarragon - also liven up the plate and make simple foods more flavorful. Roasting vegetables is another method I love: It brings out the flavor in a way that steaming and sautéing simply can’t, and it’s so easy to get creative with things like fennel and squash. Roasted veggies also taste more intense with garnishes like lemon, cumin seeds and mint. The options are endless!

I’m also big on healthful smoothies - they’re fun to prepare, offer great nutritional value and are so much better than sugar-laden fruit juices. Adding things like ground flax seeds, coconut water and agave nectar can really dress up the beverage and increase its health benefits even more.

My most innovative practice is also probably the most old-school of them all: I shop from the source. I love spending time at farmer’s markets and picking the freshest, brightest and most seasonal foods available, whether it’s a selection of succulent summer berries or an array of crisp apples in autumn. With so many opportunities to eat clean and so many benefits to eating fresh, there’s no excuse not to take advantage and reap them all!

There are few adventures I love more than a road trip, be it an impromptu trek to the country, a drive along the coast or merely taking off without any specific aim. What I don’t love: most “road trip” foods aren’t exactly of the health-conscious variety. In fact, they tend to be the exact opposite - think the same potato chips, cookies and candy bars you noshed on as a kid in the backseat all those years ago.

Fast forward to today. I’m in the driver’s seat - literally and figuratively. When it comes to planning my road trip, I keep one goal in mind: fresh foods that taste great and keep me satisfied. All I need is a cooler large enough to hold enough food for the trip (plus enough for whoever is along for the ride, natch). Just like Ben and Justin, the intrepid travelers who took an adventurous cross country “Freshpedition” with a GE French Door Refrigerator hooked up to the back of their Ford truck, I’m all about good, healthy foods. These two roughed their way across the country, fridge full of fresh foods in tow, in order to surprise a scientist working in a remote desert with a delicious, home-cooked meal.

Inspired yet? The good news is, I don’t have to drive cross country to a desert in order to replicate the experience. I can throw together a few healthy foods of my own, right in the comfort of my own home, before I hit the road. Some of my favorite on-the-go options include baby carrots, cherry tomatoes, frozen grapes, fruit salads (sliced apples, peaches, apricots and plums) and almonds. I also love tossing a jar of sunflower seed butter and a container of hummus into the cooler - they’re both perfect for dipping and are relatively mess-free, too.

When it comes to drinks, I steer clear of sodas and juices. I love blending together a little health smoothie before I go, complete with almond milk, bananas, strawberries, flax seeds and a touch of sweetener. Not only is it nutritious, but it also keeps me fuller than any canned beverage ever could.

Perhaps the most important reason to opt for fresh foods over junk: they keep me energetic and alert while I drive. There’s nothing safe about suffering post-meal grogginess on the road - ask anyone who’s ever needed a nap 20 minutes after lunch. Hydrating and healthy, fresh foods are always the perfect choice for a road trip.

Since deciding to step up my fitness routine this summer, a new pair of sneakers were my first order of business. It’s not that I don’t have a few pairs of running shoes, I do, but they’re pretty basic looking (read: boring) which doesn’t help much in the daily motivation department.
