NYFW emerging talent: Jen Kao
While most of the media buzz this week has surrounded the new Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week hub Lincoln Center, a smaller set of shows took place at the Metropolitan Pavilion on 18th Street from Sept. 12 to 14: The GreenShows. For its third season, The GreenShows Eco Fashion Week featured the spring 2011 collections of ten sustainable designers. We were thrilled to hear that the eco-fashion movement has grown so much in popularity, but we were even more excited when we finally got a look at the gorgeous pieces produced by the featured designers. After this season, we think all misconceptions of sustainable style (i.e. tree huggers running around wearing recycled potato sacks) have been banished. Have a look for yourself:
Ashton Michael Black
Designer Ashton Hirota launched his menswear and womenswear line, Ashton Michael, in 2004. His punk rock-inspired spring 2011 collection featured recycled bamboo, PET, cotton, and even coconut, according to fashionindie.com. The line will be available at the LA flagship store, House of Infinite Radness, and online at 80spurple.com.
Auralis
Bright, youthful, and contemporary are all terms that define Auralis Herrero's spring 2011 collection. Made from recycled hemp, organic cotton, soy jersey, and peace silk, the collection was named "the most wearable" of all those seen during Eco Fashion Week by ecouterre.com.
Samantha Pleet
Samantha Pleet's show closed the mini fashion week last night. Already a co-recipient of the 2009 Ecco Domani Sustainable Award (for her work on Bodkin), this designer is definitely one to watch for spring 2011.
Other designers that showed this week included Bright Young Things, Dress Reform, Joann Berman, Lavuk, Luis Valenzuela, Milliners Guild, and Susan Cianciolo. For more information, visit thegreenshows.com.
