August 2011 Archives

When I think fanny pack, I think of tourists wearing shorts, t-shirts, and visors that I nearly run over every day on my way through Times Square. But lately we've been hearing a lot of buzz about trendy, designer fanny packs. And we hate to admit it, but after seeing so many interpretations of the one-time fashion faux pas, they're beginning to grow on us.

One of the lines who does the fanny pack well is Matahari, with their collaboration with Lovemade. The leather bags, available at, look luxe with trendy details like a chain strap and fringe tassle. We also love the price point - these bags are all under $100!matahari_fanny-packs_thumb.jpg

insight51_decade_boutique_pittsburgh_fashion.jpgWhen one thinks about Pittsburgh, they typically don't associate the city with up and coming fashion labels. But while scoping out the style scene in the neighborhood this weekend, we found a boutique called Decade on the South Side, filled with cool lines that aren't stocked in many places. The store's owner, Steve Ford, originally worked in Los Angeles for Worn Free (a company that reproduces original tees famously worn by rock legends) but it was always his dream to return to his hometown of Pittsburgh and open a unique store.

One of the lines that caught our eye was Australia-based Insight 51. Inspired by surfing, skating, and street art, the lifestyle collection is laid back with slightly edgy pieces. Decades doesn't have online shopping yet (although you can phone in an order, and if you're ever in the area we recommend checking it out), but we found more photos of clothing from Insight 51's website. Click here for a list of stores that carry Insight 51!

IMG_2550Look9__94543_zoom.jpgWhat differentiates one silk piece from another? San Francisco-based eco-chic apparel line Amour Vert's goal is to educate consumers on this topic. Designer Linda Balti uses "Peace Silk," a more ethical silk than many brands are using today.

Peace Silk is cultivated by certified local farmers overseas, and does not harm the silkworm after it has spun its cocoon, unlike with traditional silk, where the silkworm is boiled or gassed. During the Peace Silk process, the cocoon is spun onto spools, producing a warm and soft fabric.

This fabric is not only ethical, it is relatively affordable. Amour Vert's silk collection is priced under $200 for office-ready attire and elegant dresses. Shop more looks at

cecilia-gonzales-bracelet-silk-chain-moxsie.jpgWhile browsing Moxsie the other day we stumbled upon these must-have bracelets from Celia Gonzalez. Handmade with dyed silk cord weaved into long natural brass chains, the bracelets also double as a perfect-for-layering necklaces!

Designer Cecilia Gonazalez is based in Miami, where she hand crafts each piece in her Coconut Grove studio. To preserver the uniqueness of her pieces, Gonzalez uses an arduous process of oxidation and patination on the metals, chains, and charms. She layers many elements together to create modern jewelry pieces with an aged look of antiquity.

We're happy to have this up-and-coming label on our radar!
