Shore things 2011: stylish beach totesThe official kick off of summer is this weekend, and we can't think of a better excuse for having a party! So grab a few friends, follow these tips, and let the fun begin!
The theme
A traditional backyard bbq, of course! Decorate your yard with tiki torches and paper lanterns; spread blankets, outdoor pillows and chairs around the yard for relaxed seating. If you don't have a backyard, you can decorate your indoor space with artificial grass and picnic blankets.
The food
It wouldn't be a bbq without hamburgers and hot dogs. Be sure to include some veggie burgers and hot dogs as an option. Mix up a big batch of pasta salad and cole slaw and grill up some vegetables or corn on the cob for side dishes. For an indoor twist, serve up mini burgers (sliders) and pigs in the blanket.
The cocktail
Bacardi Hand Shaken Daiquiri
- Moisten the rim of a tall glass then dip in sugar to rim the edges (colored sugar makes a summery presentation)
- Pour Bacardi Daiquiri over ice
- Garnish with a lime wedge
- Enjoy!
The dessert
Nothing beats popsicles, ice cream sandwiches and watermelon, and it doesn't get easier than that!
The dress code
A maxi dress and sandals or denim shorts and a 70s-inspired top.
The games
Set up classic backyard games like croquet, horseshoes and badminton for guests to enjoy. Place a few beach balls and footballs around, as well. For some kiddie fun that even adults will enjoy, place a bucket of sidewalk chalk, a jumprope and bubbles to blow around the yard.
The music
Create an iTunes mix of songs that invokes summertime (i.e. anything from the Beach Boys, "Summertime" by Dj Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince, "Cruel Summer" by Bananarama, "All Summer Long" by Kid Rock...)
Extras
Be sure to have plenty of sunscreen and bug spray on hand just in case. Colorful Paper fans are a nice treat for keeping cool.
